Why You Should Visit Arizona

Post by Sharon and Julie

As much we Arizonans complain about the desert, sun, dry, and heat, there are some things to love about this place from November to May.

You see sights, experience smells and tastes, history, and sounds here you never have before -

180 degrees of sky. With particulates in the air, the sunsets can be quite brilliant.

Saguaro cacti - found in AZ and Mexico

Storms that take your breath away - lashing at the flat lands, spreading wind across soil to create dust storms "Haboobs"

Critters include wintering birds, javelina (wild boars), hawks, eagles, turkey vultures, hummingbirds, roadrunners, jackrabbits, coyotes, and more.
Sound travels differently in the desert flatlands - music played miles away sounds like it's next door.

The air is filled with particulates and static, so beware when you touch metal.

(Dust devil - whirlwind on desert - see a lot of these along I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson)

The scents include creosote - a lemony/pine scent, earthen dust, damp sage.

The tastes are unique - from mesquite wood-cooked meats to mesquite beans (chalky pepto-bismol taste), to cactus paddles cut and put in salads and prickly pear fruit (a combination of watermelon and bubble gum flavor that is addictive).

Prickly Pear Soda (amazing!)

It's hard to explain the quality of sunlight and the feel of dry air. It makes temperatures very true to their number.

(Both of us were in a car directly under this one)

And when we finally do get a rain (8 inches a year), it hits the hard baked ground and sits, causing things to come to a flooding standstill with one inch of rain.

Where to Go

If you want to experience desert/old west, we suggest Southern AZ around Tucson, Bisbee, Tombstone. Look up things like Shady Dell, Lowell, and "The Thing" roadside attraction.

If you want a golfing/resort experience, we suggest Scottsdale and Paradise Valley in the Phoenix area. 10 best golf courses in Phoenix area. Resorts like Sanctuary, Phoenician, Omni Scottsdale and Scottsdale Princess are super well loved. Shopping southwestern style is great in downtown Scottsdale.

If you want spiritual awakening, we suggest Sedona Arizona in Central AZ. You can enjoy amazing margaritas, the best shopping and art galleries, views of red rock mountains around you, aura photography, healing, chakra alignment, drum circles, and vortex tours. There is something in the air there that is just so different than anywhere else on the planet.

If you want geology, we suggest Northern AZ along historic route 66 (Route I-40) around petrified forest, meteor crater, painted desert, and Grand Canyon.
