Fountain of Youth: Pride Vs Vanity

Post by Sharon

We are four years apart, but at 55, this is what Julie and I looked like. We are now 61 and 57 and still full of pride.
PRIDE: A feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

Pride is the Fountain of Youth! Pride says that, with work and focus, being thankful for what you have, taking care of what you've been bestowed, you are making the most of what God gave you.

Vanity: Excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements.

Vanity is a dirty pool! Vanity insists you do what you want and when the time comes you have to pay the piper, you look to doctors, surgeons, and expensive cosmetics to fix the problems. It's based on a false sense of what self is and then reality hits and a lot of backpeddling to let someone else do the work.

What does pride have to do with aging? It differs from Vanity and this post will show the difference.

Let's figure out why these folks are defying their age.

Perhaps they are defining it

We don't age like mom and dad. We don't give up in our 50s or 60s or even 70s. We know we have more to experience.

I had elders in my family who lived bad lifestyles and died young. I used to worry about the genes I carry until I realized that I was very aware of what the genes would do if I abused cigarettes, food, alcohol and stress, but what could my genes do if I lived optimally?

Genes give you a propensity if you abuse your lifestyle but they aren't a prison sentence. My father died at 59, his sister at 93. And she was still driving and living alone. I saw where my genes could go if I lived optimally like her....

One of the common aspects of anti-aging are pride versus vanity

Vanity has folks handing over their aging process to someone else. They look for shortcuts but there is no real substance to what they do so they look like a strangely polished storefront with nothing inside but defeat, insecurity and helplessness. They know they didn't do the work and so it's a false sense of drinking from the fountain of youth. They rely on things like Botoxing, asking their doctor to prescribe medicines for all health conditions rather than taking charge of health, and surgery for all aesthetic aging.

Pride, however, says - I HAVE to workout and keep my circulation going, keep myself strong and flexble, avoid the need for diabetic, cholesterol, or blood pressure medicines. I will feed my skin only natural things and not chemicals, get good sleep, drink plenty of water, and wear less makeup so my inner glow can show. Pride feels invincible by the fact that it exhibits control and vitality.

When people diet to lose weight, they learn that each day, every decision leads toward a goal. They also know they don't wake up the next morning having lost the weight. Vanity gets liposuction. Pride does the little things every day that over time lead to an honest result. There is pride in knowing one has done it and it's real health and real resilience.

Pride brushes out hair and even puts on some makeup. Pride cares about what self thinks.

Vanity applies a mask and buys the latest beauty products to overcome attrition and atrophy. Vanity cares about what others think.

No makeup, no processing.
I am proud of my delicate coloring, it shows my heritage, my ancestors. I am proud of the Scandinavian nose from my Swedish and Norwegian lineage. I am proud of my eye color from my mother's people in the UK. I am proud of the waves in my hair.
