Feeding the Winter Birds in Creative Ways

Post by Sharon

I have a lovely memory as a child of my mother sending me out in the yard to "feed the birds" in the wintertime. She worried about her favorite, cardinals. They seemed to stay and provide a bit of red color in the black and white world of snow and bare trees.

Mom usually halved an orange, scooped it out, filled it with suet or peanut butter and then seed. I would set them in the crooks of trees and branches of bushes around the property.

Here's some fun ways to help the remaining birds of winter to come to the window and seek tasty treats where you can view them.

Let's talk about the contents -

apples

bananas

cooked pasta or rice

raisins

peanut butter

squash seeds

sunflower seeds

melon

pumpkin

cornmeal

oats

oranges

homemade wild bird suet

Get creative and resourceful. Protecting wildlife during the wintertime and having wee flying dinosaurs to inspire is the best Christmas gift of all.
