Summer Sketching with Pastel Watercolor Crayons

pastels/watercolors

I wanted something portable and easy to create art and, as an oil painting artist, I found pastels too dusty and watercolors too involved. So, I got some pastels that can activate with water. It's been a real fun summer!

I have a small duffel bag that I carry a bottled water - for wetting the brushes, a bunch of brushes bound together by a rubber band for easy sorting, a styrofoam cup for the water, the crayons, some markers for definition, and I added a white acrylic paint to the lineup for highlighting as these crayons don't do light colors atop dark well. Of course, a good watercolor paper tablet works great!

I am always interested in sky and water. Summertime, I can't get enough of oceans and pools. I will move into a darker and more colorful autumn pallette usually in August.

Ideally, I'd be outside sketching but in the Phoenix area, it is in the 100s. I often find photos online or photos I've taken, using parts of some pictures and parts of otherss. Making it my own.

I normally sketch during the lunch hour and most sketches I put about 20 minutes into. As a writer, I find that giving myself some sketching time helps my writing a lot. It's meditative and also makes me work on the visuals so necessary for writing.

Enjoy your summer and capture it in photos, writing, journaling, sculpture, art, song, dance - whatever craft/art that suits you.
