These days, "preppy" is referred to as "academia" and these are broken down into "light academia" that includes classic, varsity, scholastic, university clothing in lighter classic colors and "dark academia" that takes a twist toward deeper colors and more scholastic-meets-steampunk vibe.
Elements you might find in preppy wear include - bow ties, plaids, argyle, knit, crisp white button down business shirts, pleated pants and skirts, knee high socks, sweater tights, boots, loafers, mary janes, backpacks, vests, and lots of autumnal season neutral colors.

I readily admit, these clothes above are all on my wish list for my fall wardrobe. I hope to actually be wearing it this year, as I am out of the desert where fall doesn't exist, and into the East Coast where fall is embraced and practical.
