Cold Water - Just the Thing For What Ails You?

Polar bear dips were the rage for years, but they can be dangerous to your body, even causing a heart attack if the water is too shocking.

But, cold water can be helpful for arthritis and inflammation. It reduces swelling and inflammation. How you go about that is another consideration.

I regularly do cold water dips in the wintertime, but I live in Phoenix. The water can be in the 50s. My idea of a dip is to walk down the stairs, submerge to my shoulders, and climb back out. If the water is really cold, your muscles don't work well, so you really need someone to stand by just in case.

The best way to recreate this is to take a shower - not too hot - you don't want to shock your body at contrasts, but turn it to cold before you turn it off, make a full circle and let your whole body get hit by the cold water and then climb out and bundle up.

I'm 78% Scandinavian and the rest is Highlander Scots, so my tolerance for cold and cold water is intense. When I get out of cold water, I feel invincible. My aches and pains are gone for the rest of the day. That is why I like to do it again the next day.

It may seem counter intuitive to put cold water on sore joints, but the effect is surprising.

Autumn Foods: Autumn Harvest Platters and Ploughman Platters

Post by Sharon

When we think of autumn season, we often imagine hot soups or chili, but there is a variety of harvest-inspired meals to be made from nibbling trays of a variety of foods. As a Scandinavian and having been raised with Smorgasbord, I tend to prefer nibble varieties for a bit of flavor in each bite, and a wide variety of food types represented. Here's some great nibble tray ideas inspired by autumn harvest!

Halloween Cockitail - Sanderson Sisters' Cocktail

Roosevelt Row Arts District

Post by Julie

Along the streets in downtown Phoenix, sits a corridor of amazing art called the Roosevelt Row Arts District. This non-profit organization was created by the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation. Roosevelt Row has an array of amazing murals, esteemed galleries with exhibits that change often and are by famous artists, homegrown eateries, boutiques and much more. As you walk the RoRo district you will not only be impressed by the art and cultural events, but the cute chalets or other growing projects. The area is forever evolving.

After the stretch of streets deteriorated from the 1970s to the 1990s, many artists were drawn to the area. The buildings were dilapidated with boards on the windows and walls falling apart. The sidewalks had cracks and, in some areas, completely destroyed. Some of the buildings once served as crack houses, but were reasonably priced for studios and gallery space. As crime went down in the area, it attracted others to enjoy the artistic excitement and become part of RoRo. Be sure to visit Roosevelt Row the next time you are in Phoenix.

Tubing Down the Salt River

Post by Julie

One of our Arizona traditions is to go tubing down the Salt River. You usually go with several friends and family and head down to the Lower Salt River. The first thing you do is to park at the place where you rent tubes and then grab a bus to take you upstream to the higher elevation to get started.

Postmenopausal Makeup Application

Peach lips

Post by Sharon

Today is my 57th birthday and I'm giving y'all a gift! Makeup tips!

I am a baby boomer. My face saw the makeup of my modeling era in late 1970s to early 1980s. It saw the crazy eyeliner and lipliner of the 1980s, and overall it has rolled with the changes and trends from thick eyebrows to drawn-on eyebrows, from nearly no makeup to pancake face.

But, hitting menopausal age made me rethink trends and begin to look at my face as a showcase of not only experience and living, but knowing who I am and being okay with it. I don't want to make my skin anything other than even toned and I don't want my eyes to be anything but bright and twinkling and I don't want my lips to be bigger than they are.

As an ex model, pageant girl, and theater/film makeup artist, I will share some tips -

Best YouTube Channels For Halloween Fun

Here's my top choices for immersing myself in Halloween fun on YouTube.

Hollywood Haunter is an utter blast. This darling young couple are charming and super talented. They also love Halloween big-time. They show how they invent props, sets, and special effects and they are not only do-able, but really good-spooky fun!

Pumpkinrot is hands down the finest Halloween artist and crafter of all time. His videos are hauntingly classic Halloween, dripping with vivid imagery. He's not a chop and dice kinda horror guy. Oh, no Pumpkinrot understands the season with spooky farms, terrifyingly unique scarecrows, dark cornfields, and pagan-esque fun. I have a playlist of just his videos so I can immerse myself in Halloween and I go to his store at his website to get my Halloween cards.

Classic Halloween is great for those who miss the 50s, 60s, 70s Halloween of our youth when Halloween was done with the proper amount of enthusiasm and spookiness.

West Texas BLT

I am a BLT freak, but I do admit that I don't like tomato on my sandwiches or burgers - it's a soggy mess. I wanted the flavor, however, so I found a way to make the most flavorful BLT ever!
